Big Tube

'Big Tube'   /  5x7 in  / oil on gessoed board

One day of June, I was searching something on Google. I don't remember what exactly I was looking for at the moment (probably a tube for my summer vacation?).  But somehow I came across with this photo and liked it. Then painted it on the same day.

Done from a Google search image

Ribbon Study - Pink Spiral

Ribbon Study - Pink Spiral    5x7 in     oil on Gessobord

To get the spiral shapes, I had to use a double sided tape. Pink is hard for me to mix dark values. Ummm......... how can I improve it?

I am paintingd all day and enjoying it. Stacked cups create interesting shapes and I like it. Getting propostions and perspective right are hard but I will keep try.

Coffee & Cream

'Coffee & Cream'     5x7 in    oil on Gessobord

This creamer pot is too big compared to the coffee cup next to it but this is only creamer pot that I have now. I should buy more of them (especially various sizes).    Anyways, I recently bought a flexiclass and started to place it under my props occasionally. It helps to create nice crispy reflections if I put dark color cloth or paper underneath. Fun !

Welcoming New Member

'Welcoming New Member'     5x7 in     oil on Gessobord

I have been painting all day long  today and want to wipe off everything I did so far (two paintings). I will leave them on my drying rack for now but I might wipe them off later and start new one over on the panels.

The blue bottle in this painting is one of props that I bought at Value Village last week and done a few days ago. The apples are welcoming the new member by hugging. :)

Distortion

'Distortion'      5x7 in       oil on Gessobord

I recently visited Aaron Lifferth's blog and fell in love with his works. He makes ordinary objects extraordinary - worthy to check it out. It's too bad that he doesn't seem to post often these days. One of his works, he painted an empty glass bottle with a straw and I wanted to try it too - so here it goes. When I started to paint this, I had 'Thirst' in mind as it's title. But I guess 'Distortion' speaks more  to me. I will save 'Thirst' for later.

A Stranger in our Midst

'A Stranger in our Midst '       5 x 7 in      oil on Gessobord

I am running out of ideas for naming my paintings. I need some inspiration - maybe it's good idea to read something like magazines and fruit & vegetable websites. Why? I don't know........just came up in my mind ..... :)

To divert my mood, I went to Value Village to hunt more props to paint and bought a blue tinted bottle and white creamer. I will paint them soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updated on July 4, 2015 - I have changed this painting's tile from 'Between Apples' into 'A Stranger in our Midst' on April Rimpo's recommendation and I like it better !

So Apple-lish

'So Apple-lish'     5x7 in      oil on canvas panel

Can't stop painting apples. For a moment I thought I might need a vaccine to cure it. But I just decided to follow this flow and see what happens. I found these Galas at my local grocery store and they immediately grabbed my attention. They are so shiny and small apples - and very very cute!  I bought a bag of these and soon after I was painting them at my studio. I guess I need a powerful vaccine if I want to be cured. Oh, my !

Goodies

'Goodies'     5x7 in     oil on canvas panel

I painted this last week and forgot to upload. I am still working on apples and planning to do more apple paintings this week - interestingly I never get bored of painting them.

By the way, I found a nice way to stay cool in my apartment. I fill up the bathtub with cold water and submerge my feet in and read a book or think or do whatever I can do while sitting on the edge of my bathtub. After a while, I get okay :D

My Coffee

'My Coffee'      5x7 in     oil on canvas panel

This is my first summer spending in my new apartment. It is a three story H- shape building and my suite is on the top floor at inside corner. And there is no trees around that are taller than our building. Which means..... it gets really hot in summer. I mean REALLY hot. Sometimes I am sweating just by sitting still. It reminds me of Korean summer except humidity which is kind of nice.  But now it's only June but already worrying how I can spend July and August. I get to remember how I beared Korean summer without an air conditioner.

my new easel set up - happy with it :)

I used an french easel as my studio easel for a while and wanted have a smaller and lighter one that I can easily move around in my studio. I did some research in internet and this is what I decided to stay with - Alla Prima Pochade Box. I am using it as my studio easel but it's originally designed for outdoor use so someday I will use it as it's true intension.

There is something about painting wrapped gifts that makes me keep doing it. It's all joy to think about color combinations for gift boxes and bows, of course.  And trying to make a perfect bow is enjoyable - oh, well........actually it can be frustrating sometimes but usually fun.  Most of all, gifts accompanies joy, love, care, delight.......and excitement ( and whatever you can think of). So when I am painting or preparing for painting, I feel like I am surrounded by all the warmth of the words that gifts carry. That's something that keeps me painting them.

Perfect Bow

I didn't know there are so many ways to make a bow. I spent a half day to watch how to videos on Youtube and surprised how many types of bow gift toppers can be created. I have found several dozens of ways of tying a bow topper so far.  I am sure I could find hundreds or more if I kept looking. Probably the possibility is endless. The infinite possibilities is sooooo inspiring even though I decided to stick with the most basic types for now.

C' mon Up!

I recently had 'a ha' moment about painting white objects.  Painting white was very challenging for me. Whenever I painted white cups or plates, they turned muddy. I triple rinsed my brushes before mixing fresh grey(white) to avoid muddy colors but it didn't work. They still looked  mucky.

Now I figured out why - It wasn't my brush. It was paint remained on the surface. I use brown paint (burnt umber) for drawing and then slightly wipe it out before putting colors. Then it leaves misty image that guides me to paint. And usually there is quite a bit of  paint left on a canvas.  Now I am thinking ' the slightly wiping' underdrawing wasn't enough! It needs to be rubbed roughly! So that there should be ultra, super, tiny amount of paint left. - just tiny bit of paint to see your drawing.  White can be mixed very easily with what is underneath. So that was the brown paint that made the overall looking of painting look muddy and cloudy.

Warm-up

USD $100    Click here to purchase

Hi everyone !  I came back from a four-day camping on last Saturday. It was Mommy & Kids camping. No Daddies were allowed althought they stayed for a BBQ party on the first day and then left. There were four families including mine and we all had super fun! Kids enjoyed roasting marshmallows, running around the camp site and digging dirt. Moms enjoyed hearing our kids' giggling sound in day time and wine and beer with chatting in night time.

Now the spring break is over. School reopned today. My son got back to his daily routine and I got back to my daily painting routine. I painted a cup as a warm-up today.

Little Monkey

'Little Monkey'
5x7 in      NFS      oil on gessobord

This is one of my son's stuffies and my favorite of his. I originally planned to paint cups with chopsticks and some plates today but somehow I wasn't inspired to paint them. Then this monkey was calling me in my son's toy basket.

Nathan (my son) was pleased to see this painting when he came back from his Taekwondo spring camp. His birthday is next week so it is going to be one of his presents.

Pear Study

Pear Study      5x7 in         oil on canvas board

I played with pears today. I would like to practice more on painting pears so I will stay with them for a few days more this week. Speaking of practice, I really need to order a pre-primed canvas roll soon so that I can try different appoaches without wasting panels.

'Sugar Snap Peas'

'Sugar Snap Peas'       5x7 in       oil on canvas board

Our apartment management said that we won't have hot(possibly not cold water either) until 1pm today due to annual inspections.  It's a good thing that cold water still runs - I can use our toilets and wash my hands BUT my sink is full of dishes and cups from breakfast and ...............I am showerless. I want hot water now !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot water has been back since 1pm - they were very keen on time. All my dishes are done and waiting to be dried on the drying rack - shiny and sparkling / nice feeling. And most of all, I am clean too. ** big smile**
