Spring

' Spring'           6x6 in       oil on gessoed board

Spring is here.  I am waiting wild daisies that bloom about this time of year near my son's school. They make our 'school commute' fun.

Tranquil Light

'Tranquil Light'     6x6 in     oil on gessoed board

I have been doing several exercises from the book - 'How to See Color and Paint It' by Arthur Stern lately. The book is about helping artists to observe and see the true colors ( not what we think we see). I have done only 4~5 exercises so far but I already see positive results in my paintings. I bought the book on an amazing artist Jeremy Duncan's recommendation in his Instagram. He said that it helped him a lot as well which made me try the book.  Check his paintings here and here - when you see his beautiful landscapes, you would want to try the book out too. Happy painting and keep your brushes busy!

Together

'Together'       6x6 in      oil on gessoed board

I painted two versions of this same composition - one in green, the other one in blue back drop. This green one feels better to me.

The Hidden Tulip

'The Hidden Tulip'      6x6 in      oil on gessoed board

I took a break longer than I originally planned. There were many changes that I had to deal with. I moved my studio and it took a while to get used to it. I finally feel comfortable with my new studio set up and started to paint. Glad to be back to my painting routine. And here is one of my recent paintings - do you see the hidden tulip?

Empty Bottles

'Empty bottles'     5x5 in    oil on gessoed board

NFS

Now it's close to 1 o'clock in the morning and I am still wide awake. I shouldn't have drunk coffee in the evening. Since I am still up, I should load my laundry after posting.

Orange Shadow

'Orange Shadow'   6x6 in     oil on gessoed board

Still having fun with bottles and apples - with backlit this time. I have painted apples probably a hundred of them or even more but they are still challenging yet fun to paint. Mystery of painting I think.

Three of Us

'Three of Us'    5x5 in      oil on gessoed board

Painting amber bottles are so fun. The dark brown color catches highlight beautifully. It's enjoyable to just look at them while painting.

And I recently discovered a fascinating artist in Instagram. Her name is Teresa Oaxaca. Please check her drawings and paintings out - they are stunning !!!

Ambers & the Invisible

'Ambers & the Invisible'   5x5 in     oil on gessoed board

It seems like I can't take an exact photo of this painting. The blue background looks little darker in person. By the way, I ordered 'How to see color and paint it' by Arthur Stern yesterday. I have seen many artists recommend this book so I am looking forward to receive it.

Ahhhhhh.......

'Ahhhh.......'      5x5 in       oil on gessoed board

I had a tough time naming this painting. I wanted to have something imaginative title for it but I could only think of 'yellow plate' - which is okay ( but just wished a teeny-tiny bit more imaginative than that.)  After spending several hours on the title without a success, I decided to ask for a help to my 7 year old son who sees everything as faces: All windows and doors in a house appear eyes and mouth to him. A breakfast with eggs and bacons look a human face to him....and so on.

This is the conversation we had

Me:       "Hey, I need some ideas to give this painting a name. Do you have any suggestions?"
My son: "Of course it's a face, Mom."
"These two bottles are eyes and the yellow plate is a big wide open mouth."
"And it's saying "Ahhhhhh......".  ( he ignored the poor apple )
Me:       "......................"

Okay,  obviously his idea is more imaginative than mine, I will use his idea - period.

ps. strangely now I see it as a face after my son's comment...

Long Wait

'Long Wait'       5x5 in       oil gessoed board

I feel a lot better today. 12 hour sleep helped I guess - still have a soar throat but I feel that it'll go away soon. Anyways, do you have any props that you thought you would paint but never happened? I bought the orange mug almost a year ago thinking that it would make a great still life composition. Recently I realized the mug just stayed on my table waiting to be painted for almost a year. I am glad I finally had a chance to paint it.

Camouflaged

'Camouflaged'     5x5 in      oil on gessoed board

This is 5x5 inch painting - bit smaller than I usually do. I am running out of 6x6 panels (only two left) so I decided to use 5x5. I ordered bunch of them and hope they arrive soon. And I feel like I'm coming down with a cold. I should get lots of sleep tonight.

Centered

'Centered'       6x6 in      oil on gessoed board

This glass bottle has been my star this week. It stretches stuffs behind it in an interesting way - I placed an apple at the back and it made the apple look like a pear. By the way, I have listed this painting as a dollar auction for this month.

Balanced

'Balanced'       6x6 in       oil on gessoed board

This is my first painting of 2016 and I named it "Balanced" because of two reasons - first, there are one glass bottle and two apples on right and left which is balanced and second, I hope everyone has balanced life in 2016 physically and mentally. It's little late to say but "Happy New Year !!"
