Wrapped Words Series - 'Try New 1 & 2'

Wrapped Words Series - 'Try New 1' / 6x6 in / oil on Gessobord

I wrapped the word ' Try New' and painted two compositions with it. I wanted to place (push) the wrapped box into one side or corner and leave others space blank - hoping to fill the emty space with interesting brush marks. I always like the beauty in emty space like the ones we often see in oriental paintings. That's what I was trying in these two compositions.......you know.....just 'trying new'....... anyways, I don't think I carried it well this time but I will keep this idea in mind.

  1. I think BOTH compositions are very successful. Love the empty space (which I don't feel is negative at all ;-) and how it is counterbalanced by the fancy package with bow. Lovely work. And now that I've read some of your blog, I also enjoy the added gift of knowing the 'secret' of holding a special word within.

  3. Jiyoung, your work is beautiful and compelling. It catches my eye often. I totally LOVE 'Try New 2." Whenever I see your paintings I think, "I want to paint like Jiyoung!" What kind of set-up do you have for your still lifes? I've done very few still lifes because I haven't yet figured out how to get good lighting, among other things. Keep on painting!

  4. Hi, Dotty. Oh.....wow..... what a nice compliment you have given me. You made me feel proud. Thank you :D My still life set up is quite simple. I use an IKEA table as my 'set up' table but it gives very limited view points so I also use some wooden boxes to get various heights. And there is a desk lamp for the light source. I also use a small piece of MDF or thick paper to block some of the light to make little more shadow on my props. It's really simple but in words, it's little complicated to explain ( English is my second language so sometimes I am not sure if I explain something well or not ) so I will take some photos of my set up and post them in my blog soon. I think I can do that one day of next week but please understand if it takes little longer. Now I know how to reach your blog so I will make sure to let you know when I post it - I will leave a message in your blog after posting it. Thank you again, Dotty and talk to you soon.

  5. Thank you for describing your still life set-up and thank you in advance for taking some photos of your set-up and posting them online. I look forward to seeing the photos. I'm hoping you'll include one that shows use of the MDF board. Thank you, too, for having English as a second language; your gift to me since I don't know your primary language : )
